Massage Therapy 

Massage therapy is the manipulation of superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue through the use of a number of techniques, to enhance function, aid in the healing process, decrease muscle reflex activity, inhibit motor-neuron excitability, and promote relaxation and well-being. 

Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that this therapy aids in treatment of many different conditions. Some of these conditions include:

  • Stress, pain, muscle tension
  • Anxiety, digestive disorders
  • Fibromyalgia, headaches,insomnia
  • Myofascial pain syndrome, paresthesias and nerve pain  
  • soft tissue strains or injuries, sports injuries
  • Temporomandibular joint pain

There are many different types of massage including, but not limited to:

Swedish massage. This is a gentle form of massage that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize you.

Deep massage. This massage technique is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue.  Deep tissue massage is recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity, and patients who have sustained physical injury.

Trigger point massage. This massage focuses on areas of tight muscle fibers that can form in your muscles after injuries or overuse.

Prenatal massage. This massage technique is performed either sidelying or with special pregnacy pillows to allow for more comfortable positioning.
